Edward Lynn Skinkle, Age 99 of Norway Road, Town of Baldwin, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the home of his daughter in North Chemung. Ed was born April 30, 1919 in Big Flats son of the late Emery and Augusta (Palmer) Skinkle. He was a veteran of the US Army during WWII. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne and a “Top Kick” that trained the troops. He attended Parachute Jump School at Fort Benning, Georgia and achieved the rank of First Sergeant with Company H the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment and was offered OCS training, which he declined. He often remarked about how brave the kids were that he trained, and he was only a couple of years older than them. He received the American Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal. Ed was married to the former Joyce (Westfall) Skinkle who passed away in 1987.
Ed was a truck driver for Spaulding Bakeries and Millbrook Bread in the Elmira area and retired over 30 years ago. He also farmed for many years on his farm in Lowman, NY. Ed enjoyed playing golf and cards, boating, fishing, working on mechanical things and fixing cars, RV camping and reading poetry.
Ed had nine siblings and was predeceased by all except his youngest sister Mazie Lohrmann of Lyons, NY. He is also survived by his children, Dianne Simmons of Oriental, NC, Jocelyn Day of Lowman, NY, Bruce Lermeny of Loveland, CO, Jeffrey & Christine Skinkle of Lowman, NY, daughter-in-law, Donna Lermeny of Lowman, NY, eleven grandsons, one granddaughter, four great-grandsons, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, wife Joyce (Westfall) Skinkle, son Richard Lermeny, daughter-in-law, Annetta Marlowe, son-in-law, William Day and his long-time companion, Marion (Tink) Gee Walters.
