Joyce L. (Douglas) Colwell
January 3, 1929 — March 1, 2017
Joyce L. (Douglas) Colwell, 88, of Ridgebury, PA, passed away on March 1, 2017 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. She was the loving wife of the late Kenneth L. Colwell, Sr. who passed away 1990. The couple married in 1949 and had 41 happy years together.
Joyce was born on January 3, 1929 in Elmira, NY, daughter of the late Wesley H. and Elizabeth (Middaugh) Douglas. She was a 1947 graduate of Wellsburg High School and went on to be a farmer’s wife, school bus driver and teacher’s aide for the hearing impaired for the Athens Area School District, Athens, PA. She was a member of the Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church and was an avid volunteer for the American Cancer Society in the Athens and Bentley Creek communities. She had a great passion for gardening, sewing, reading, and watching wrestling on the television. Joyce’s greatest passion was her family and friends and spending time with them.
Joyce is survived by her daughters Mary Jane (Bruce) Lackey and Cheryl (Bruce) Wittie, her son Kenneth Colwell, Jr., granddaughter Jacklyn (Bill) King, her grandsons Wesley Wittie and Dylan (Rebecca) Lackey, her granddaughters Jennifer Wittie, Laurie (David) Clifton, and Michelle (David) Russel, several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, her brother Raymond (Doris) Douglas, along with several nieces and nephews and many others who called her “Mom” or “Grandma”. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth, and her daughter Arleen Colwell.
Family and friends are welcome to gather from 9:00-11:00 am on Monday, March 6, 2017 at Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street Wellsburg, NY. The funeral service to honor Joyce’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 6th at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Wuethrich officiating. Burial will follow in Ashland Cemetery.
