Lawrence John Detrick, Sr.

Ridgebury, PA

Mr. Lawrence John Detrick, Sr., peacefully passed away at his home in Ridgebury, PA, on May 3, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Detrick was 89 years old at the time of his passing. He was the loving husband of the late Rachel Ann (Sheffer) Detrick who passed away November 28, 2020. The couple married November 12, 1960 and had 60 happy years together.

John was born on April 19, 1935, in Skinners Eddy, PA, son of the late Howard and Alice Detrick. Throughout his life, John had a successful career, proudly serving in the US Air Force before retiring from the US Post Office in Elmira, NY. In his retirement years, he continued to make a positive impact by driving a Head Start school bus. He was dedicated to his work and valued the importance of service.

An outdoorsman at heart, John found joy in hunting and fishing, as well as spending time camping with his loved ones. He cherished gatherings with family and friends, always bringing warmth and laughter to those around him. He was a valued member of Berrytown Wesleyan Church and the American Legion Post #49 in Troy, PA.

John is survived by his sons Lawrence J. (Laura) Detrick, Jr. of Ridgebury, and David (Melissa) Detrick of Bowmansville, PA; grandchildren Matthew Detrick, Sarah Detrick, Cody (Emily) Detrick, and Chelsie (Josh) Vanderpool; several precious great-grandchildren; brothers James Edward Detrick of Williamsport, PA and Nelson Cook of Waverly, NY; sister and brother-in-law Ruth and David Ballinger and their children of New Jersey; as well as several nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Rachel Ann (Sheffer) Detrick, and several siblings.

Family and friends are welcome to call from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Roberts Funeral Home, Inc., located at 279 Main St. in Wellsburg, NY. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Patrick Kelly officiating. John will be laid to rest in the Bentley Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in John’s honor to the Berrytown Wesleyan Church, 178 Burt Road, Gillett, PA 16925.
