Michael R. Smith, 65, of Wellsburg, NY passed away on Friday, August 22, 2014 at his home.  Mike was born on April 18, 1949 in Elmira, NY, son of the late Robert J. “Perch” Smith and Sylvia L. (Denton) Smith of Wellsburg.  He was a South Side High School graduate.  Mike served his country in the US Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War.  After he came stateside, Mike became a truck driver, and most recently drove for Lewis Transportation.  He enjoyed tinkering with old cars, buying tools, and cooking.  When he was younger, Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf.

Mike is survived by his mother Sylvia, his sons: Christopher (Patricia) Smith of Horseheads, NY, and Timothy M. Smith of Markleeville, CA, his grandchildren Makenzie Smith, Amber Mattice, Madeline Smith, Maya Smith, and Stella Smith, and his brother Mark Smith of Wellsburg, NY.  He was preceded in death by his father Robert J. “Perch” Smith who passed away on March 3, 2012.

Family and friends are welcome to call from 12:00-1:00 pm on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street Wellsburg, NY.  The memorial service to honor Mike’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 28th at the funeral home and military rites will be given by the Chemung County Honor Squad.  The placement of the urn in the Woodlawn National Cemetery Memorial Wall will be at the convenience of Mike’s family.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made in Mike’s memory to the Wounded Warriors Project 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300 Jacksonville, Florida 32256 or to the Disabled American Veterans PO Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
