Kenneth W. Hughes, Age 91 of  Elmira, NY passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Ken was born May 7, 1923 in Nelson Twp., PA.  The eldest of ten children and the son of the late William Clarence and Louisa (Jones) Hughes, he was a big part in helping the family when they moved to their Lowman farm during the depression in the 1930’s.  Ken was a tireless worker who ran a dairy farm for years and was also employed by the US Postal Service and worked at the Processing Center on Sullivan Street in Elmira until he retired.  He rarely sat idle, always finding stuff to tinker with.  He was a master of farmyard engineering and could fix most anything with hay wire and a board.  Ken enjoyed helping others.  He often took senior friends to appointments and would help with any of their needs volunteering through RSVP.  He volunteered and sat on the Board of Directors with Child Character Education.  Ken loved growing vegetables and received great joy in sharing his harvest including picking fruit from the orchards in lake country.  He was a Master Mason Breesport Lodge # 725 F&AM with 66 years of membership.   Ken had great faith in God and attended church when able.  Ken looked after all the family and would help out if he saw a need.  He truly was the Patriarch of the Hughes family and filled those shoes well!  He will be fondly remembered and missed by all of us.  Family and friends are invited to call Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 1 to 3 PM at the Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street, Wellsburg, NY.  His funeral service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 3 PM with his friend Rev. James Crupi officiating.  Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Elmira, NY.   Ken is survived by a son Benjamin C. (Kelly) Hughes of Elmira,  grandsons Andrew J. (Samantha) Hughes of Jamestown, NY, Eric M. (Taylor Houseman) Hughes of Little York, NY, great-grandchildren, Anthony, Lily and Jamie Hughes of Jamestown, NY, sisters,  Phyllis Lowman, Glenora Gunderman, Janice & Lem Pipher, Marilyn & Tom Karski, Beverly & Ed Harland, a brother-in-law, Gerald May, several nieces, nephews, cousins, his special companion Ruby Conley  and his best buddies Don Stevens and Butch Crowningshield.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, two wives, Arlene (Bixby) Hughes, Loraine K. (Legro) Hughes and an ex-wife Jean (Snell) Hughes.  A special thank you to niece, Melanie Lowman and nephew, Mike May.
