What Are VA Burial Benefits?
The VA burial benefits are meant to help service members, veterans, and their families plan and pay for burial or memorial services in VA national cemeteries. These full benefits honor the service of those who gave their lives to protect our country and help families in need during hard times.
Memorial items from Veterans Affairs are a way to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of our country's heroes. These benefits make sure that veterans get the respect and recognition they deserve in their final arrangements.
Eligibility for Veterans Burial Benefits
Who Qualifies for Burial in National Cemeteries?
Veterans, service members, spouses, and dependents may be eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery and other benefits if they meet specific requirements:
- A veteran who didn't receive a dishonorable discharge
- A service member who died while on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty for training
- The spouse or minor child of a veteran, even if the veteran died first
- In some cases, the unmarried adult dependent child of a veteran
Our experienced staff helps Wellsburg families determine eligibility and navigate the application process to ensure veterans receive all benefits they have earned through their service.
Documentation and Verification
Our team assists families in gathering necessary documentation to verify eligibility for veterans benefits. This includes military service records, discharge papers, and other required documentation that substantiates the veteran's service and eligibility for specific benefits.
Military Funeral Honors and Committal Services
Traditional Military Honors
Military funeral honors are a respectful way to honor a fallen soldier. They include playing "Taps," a rifle detail, a color guard, and service members in uniform who properly fold and present the American flag to the grieving family. These ceremonial parts honor the veteran's service and help the family members who are still alive feel better and move on.
As a way for the country to thank the deceased veteran for their service, the burial flag is usually given to their next of kin or a close friend. This important tradition links families to the larger group of people who have served and given up their lives for our country.
Eligibility for Military Honors
Veterans must meet certain service requirements for survivors to be able to get burial flags:
- Served in wartime
- Died while serving on active duty after May 27, 1941
- Served after January 31, 1955
- Served in peacetime and left military service before June 27, 1950, after serving at least one enlistment or because of a disability caused or worsened by active military service
- Served in the Selected Reserves, or served in the military forces of the Philippines while in service of the United States and died on or after April 25, 1951
Our staff helps check eligibility and works with military honor guard units to make sure the right ceremonies happen.
